Life

Education and professional life

After attending elementary school in his hometown Brandl 1958 went to Munich and completed a three-year waiter teach at a restaurant in the city, working alongside and elsewhere. After his training, he worked in Munich in 1962 as a waiter in quick succession in the Syriana , an Arab restaurant in Schwabing , in the Platzl and in the nightclub ba-ba-lu , also in Schwabing. In 1964 he worked on Spiekeroog in the Hotel Zur Linde . Since Franz Brandl was tempted to specialize in the direction of a bartender, he increasingly worked in this direction, which was difficult because there was virtually no bar culture in Germany at the time. Further stations led Brandl between 1965 and 1969 via Dortmund , Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Cuxhaven and Bielefeld and finally back to Munich. From 1972 to 1974 he worked as a bar manager at the Sheraton Hotel Munich, which was then the largest hotel in Europe. When Harry's New York Bar was opened in Munich in September 1974 as the first American bar in Germany that was independent of a hotel, Brandl was the bartender there.

From 1978 to 1983, Franz Brandl worked for Eckart Witzigmann (picture) and ran the bar in his Aubergine restaurant .

In 1976 Franz Brandl passed the bar master exam and became one of the first official German bar master. In 1977 he worked briefly at the Grand Hotel Continental (Munich) . Then one of the most important stations of his professional life followed, the activity in Eckart Witzigmanns Aubergine , the first three-star restaurant in Germany, where Brandl ran the bar from 1978 to 1981.

After his master craftsman examination, Brandl also advocated upgrading the profile of the bartender and succeeded in getting the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Munich and Upper Bavaria to hold bartender and bar master’s exams again in 1984 after a break of several years. The bartender has not yet become a state-recognized training occupation (as of 2015).

After saying goodbye to the aubergine , Franz Brandl finally went into business for himself. He ran the Schwabinger Cocktail Lounge in Schwabing from 1983 to 1985 and Brandls Bar from 1987 to 1992 ; then he retired from active professional life. He then wrote several books.

As a specialist author

Franz Brandl is known to a wide audience as the author of practical guides and recipe collections for cocktails and other mixed drinks. His book Gourmet Mix Guide , first published in 1982, with its 418 pages, was the first detailed cocktail and product history book of recent times in German and is now one of the classics of bar literature. From 1988 onwards he had around 25 other titles followed, the majority of which he published in Südwest-Verlag . Some of them have had multiple editions (including licensed editions from other publishers) and some of them have been translated into other languages.

His successful titles include his Big Cocktail Book / Cocktails with Alcohol (first published in 1988), his Mix Guide (several editions since 1998), Liqueurs of the World (2000) and Cocktails. Over 1000 drinks with and without alcohol (2015). His main works also include the extensive volumes Brandls Bar-Buch (1996) and Der Barmeister (1997), published by Matthaes Verlag , in which the author devotes himself intensively to professional aspects.

Franz Brandl, who is also an employee of the trade journal Mixology - Magazin für Barkultur , published 2015 under the title Der Barmixer. Memories of a Crazy Life before his autobiography .
