from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Xaver Effenberger (born April 7, 1930 in Goldenstein , Czechoslovakia ) is a German chemist . He was rector of the University of Stuttgart from 1986 to 1990.

Life

Franz Effenberger initially studied textile engineering at the textile engineering school in Krefeld , then chemistry at the Technical University of Stuttgart . In 1958 he was at Hellmut Bredereck with the issue of investigations on condensed heterocyclic ring systems doctorate . From 1964 to 1969 he received a scholarship from the Karl Winnacker Foundation and in 1965 he was involved in a research project at the University of Michigan . In 1964 he completed his habilitation with a paper on the problem of addition and substitution of carbon double bonds.

In 1971 he received a call to the chair of organic chemistry at the University of Stuttgart and rejected a simultaneous call to the Technical University of Braunschweig . From 1980 to 1986 he was Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Stuttgart and was significantly involved in developing bioprocess engineering . Effenberger was rector of the University of Stuttgart from 1986 to 1990, and in 1998 he retired .

In 1977 he was visiting professor at Cornell University in Ithaka (USA), in 1989 he was visiting professor at the École supérieure de physique et de chimie industrielles de la ville de Paris (ESPCI) in Paris .

Act

Franz Effenberger was appointed to the chair for organic chemistry at the University of Stuttgart in 1971 as the successor to Hellmut Bredereck . His most important areas of work include the chemistry of aromatics, heterocycles and amino acids, the chemical principles of molecular electronics, the use of enzymes in synthesis and the development of ultra-thin organic layers. He has submitted around 350 publications and 55 patents, which impressively prove his scientific achievements.

In the 1970s he participated in a working group of the Society of German Chemists and in a commission of the state of Baden-Württemberg on the reform of chemistry studies. In the early 1980s he co-founded the trilingual chemistry course at the University of Stuttgart and at the Université Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg I - ULP) . He is involved in the Foundation Board of Trustees of the Academy for Spoken Word.

As Vice Rector from 1980 to 1986 and as Rector from 1987 to 1990 Effenberger played a decisive role in the massive development and expansion of new technologies at the University of Stuttgart. His services include the development and implementation of the Center for Bioprocess Engineering, the establishment and financing of the institutes for screen technology and laser technology, as well as the establishment and establishment of the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Technology (ZSW) Stuttgart / Ulm. Effenberger also campaigned for the financing and construction of the Hysolar building designed by Günther Behnisch, for securing the sports science course and the construction of the sports facilities on the Vaihingen campus. He raised at least three million marks in private funds for the acquisition of Eugen Sänger's property and the construction of the International Meeting Center (IBZ). The profiling of computer science through the establishment of the Institute for Parallel and Distributed Systems and the construction of the wind tunnel at the Research Institute for Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS) also bear the signature of Effenberger.

He was a long-time member of the board of trustees of the German Institute for Textile and Fiber Research (DITF). In 2003 he was entrusted with the provisional management of the Institute for Textile Chemistry and Man-Made Fibers Denkendorf (ITCF) Denkendorf. Under his direction, the current Institute for Textile Chemistry and Man-Made Fibers (ITCF) was founded through the union of the Institute for Textile Chemistry (ITC) and the Institute for Chemical Fibers (ICF).

Various academics have emerged from his academic school who are or have headed working groups as professors. So z. B. Rolf Gleiter ( University of Heidelberg ), Wolf Dieter Stohrer ( University of Bremen ), Jörg Daub ( University of Regensburg ), Peter Bäuerle ( University of Ulm ), Thomas Ziegler ( University of Tübingen ) and Frank Würthner ( University of Würzburg ).

As a university lecturer, Franz Effenberger has always sought cooperation with the chemical industry. Many of his academic students hold important positions as industrial chemists e.g. B. Taken at the companies Clariant , BASF and Evonik (formerly Degussa ).
