Franz Fankhauser

Franz Fankhauser (born September 2, 1883 in Bleichegut near Burgdorf , Canton of Bern , † November 16, 1959 in Winterthur ) was a Swiss Romance scholar , teacher and author .

life and work

Franz Fankhauser was the son of the farmer and entrepreneur Franz Fankhauser. From 1902 to 1909 he studied Romance studies, classical philology , Sanskrit and history at the University of Basel and later at the University of Bern . As a student of Karl Jaberg and Louis Gauchat , he wrote a dissertation in 1908 on the Patois des Val d'Illiez . From 1909 to 1953 Fankhauser worked as a teacher for French, Italian and Latin at the Gymnasium Winterthur. When he was appointed to the University of Lausanne in 1929 , he declined in favor of his teaching post.

From 1906 to 1917, Fankhauser collected thousands of field and place names in the French-German border area for the Glossaire des patois de la Suisse romande . In 1918 the study of Ticino torba ("memory") followed, in which he combined language and material research.

In the same year, Fankhauser and his friend Jakob Jud published Martin Lutta's dissertation . Over the years, Fankhauser supervised over fifty dissertations as a consultant and proofreader. With his knowledge he supports the editorial team of the Dicziunari Rumantsch Grischun . In gratitude, the Rätische name book published in 1939 was dedicated to Fankhauser and Jud. Fankhauser was also a co-author of the Burgdorf yearbooks .
