Franz Fuhrmann
Franz Josef Wilhelm Fuhrmann (born August 31, 1916 in Zell am See ; † July 14, 2016 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian art historian and university professor .

Fuhrmann was born as the son of the hat maker Franz Fuhrmann and the chief forester's daughter Rosa, nee. Peitler, born in Zell am See. When he was three years old, his family moved to Golling . He attended grammar school in Salzburg and passed his Matura with distinction in 1936 . He then studied art history and history at the University of Vienna under Karl Oettinger and Hans Sedlmayr and became a member of the Austrian Institute for Historical Research. The doctorate to Dr. phil. took place in 1943 during several study vacations during the war. In his dissertation he dealt with the construction of chapels in Salzburg during the time of Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau .
After his return from Soviet captivity in 1947, Fuhrmann became curator , deputy director and head of the art and cultural history collections of the Carolino Augusteum Museum in April 1948 . Until the end of his life he was a lieutenant a. D. also member of the Salzburg officers' society. His professional interest was primarily in the conservation and scientific preparation of the museum's graphic collection. This occupation led to the two works “Salzburg in old views. The City "and" The Country ". With these works he completed his habilitation with Gerhard H. Franz at the University of Graz . He was also head of the art history series at the Salzburg Adult Education Center and engaged in this activity the greats of the subject for lectures.
On January 1, 1969, Fuhrmann was appointed to the newly created chair for Austrian art history at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg . He held this position until his retirement in 1986. From 1975 to 1986 Franz Fuhrmann was chairman of the jury of the Prize for Fine Arts of the Salzburg Economy. In addition to his scientific work, his appearance as a warning against the destruction of valuable buildings and as a fighter for the preservation of all valuable cultural assets should be mentioned. In earlier times he made a significant contribution to maintaining the quality of Salzburg's old town.
To compensate for this, Fuhrmann also enjoyed playing the violin, organ, piano, guitar and accordion from a young age; he was a skier, mountaineer and rider. His wife Maria Elisabeth, b. Tremmel, died in 2015, she was over 100 years old. He too died in Salzburg at the age of 100.
