He has been with ORF since 1980 , where he was a correspondent in Washington from 1982 to 1983 , from 1985 to 1989 he headed the Moscow office, from 1989 to 1995 that in Washington and in 1999 the ORF office in London. From 1995 to 1999 he was deputy editor-in-chief of information television and head of " Zeit im Bild ". In February 2000 he was appointed head of the “Europa-Journal” within the framework of the “Journal Panorama” bar on Austria 1 (radio). At the University of Innsbruck he worked as a lecturer at the Institute for Political Science with a focus on media and international reporting.

In 2010, after 30 years with ORF, he retired and began studying biology. In an article in the Viennese city newspaper “ Falter ” he took stock of modern journalism, which he is critical of:

Journalism has changed. Someone who has become a journalist like me 35 years ago finds it difficult to still feel at home in the changed landscape. I come from the world of the '68 and became a journalist because I was convinced of the social role of information. ... I don't know how profitable newspapers were back then, it didn't seem to matter. Today, however, the return has become more important than the socio-political claim. ... My field was international reporting, as a correspondent in Moscow, Washington, London. In times of globalization, one would think that it is gaining importance. But in the new cost accounting, correspondent offices are unprofitable and bring little rate.

Awards

In 2010 he received the “ Robert Hochner Prize for Outstanding Journalistic Achievement” because he researches meticulously, analyzes in depth and thinks in large contexts how the jury justified its decision.
