Franz Klarwein (born March 8, 1914 in Garmisch , † December 16, 1991 in Grünwald near Munich ) was a German opera singer ( lyric tenor ).

Life

Franz Klarwein's singing talent was discovered by Richard Strauss , with whom he was a lifelong friend. On the advice of the composer, he studied singing at the music academies in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin after graduating from high school . At the age of 23 the singer made his debut at the Berlin Volksoper . He belonged to this stage until 1942. As a result he became a permanent member of the Bavarian State Opera . There he sang on October 28, 1942 in the world premiere of the opera CapriccioRichard Strauss (with whom he spent many skat evenings) played the relatively small, if not very easy role of the Italian singer, which was frenetically acclaimed by the audience. In 1942/1943 he performed at the Salzburg Festival, where he also sang the tenor solo in Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

In the 1949 German version, Franz Klarwein dubbed the American voice actor Jack Mercer , who played the role of King Little (Prince Unverzagt) in the film Gulliver's Travels (from 1939).

At the Bavarian State Opera, the tenor, who was considered a solid pillar of the ensemble, played the title role in the German premiere of Heinrich Sutermeister's opera "Raskolnikoff" . He also sang on August 11, 1957 in the world premiere of Paul Hindemith's Die Harmonie der Welt . The singer also excelled in almost all operas by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner . The ensemble of the Bavarian State Opera boasted an illustrious group of singers who made the theater famous in Europe and in the entire operatic world - artists such as Hertha Töpper , Erika Köth , Sári Barabás , Rosl Schwaiger , Lilian Benningsen , Marianne Schech , Lotte Schädle , Georgine von Milinkovic , Hans Hotter , Kieth Engen , Richard Holm , to name just a few of the many, were Franz Klarwein's colleagues and stage partners, with whom he also sang many records.

In the course of his career, Franz Klarwein, whose voice turned more and more into a heroic tenor over the years, sang on the major European opera stages, in Frankfurt / Main, Cologne, Berlin, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, etc. He also enjoyed making guest appearances in the Bavarian "province" (for example in Deggendorf or Passau).

In 1977 he said goodbye to the opera stage. Franz Klarwein was married to the soprano Sári Barabás since 1956 . He often stood with her on stage and in the concert hall. Both appearances in November 1961 in the Nibelungenhalle Passau in Carmina Burana will not be forgotten . The artist couple also enjoyed going on excursions into the world of operetta. His daughter from his first marriage, Michaela Klarwein , is a singer and mainly an actress.

Numerous sound carriers document the artistic work of the singer.

His grave is in the forest cemetery in Grünwald near Munich.
