Georgine von Milinkovic (also Milinković ; born July 7, 1913 in Prague ; † February 26, 1986 in Munich ) was a German opera singer with the mezzo-soprano voice .

Life

Georgine von Milinkovic originally came from a Croatian family. She studied singing at the Music Academy in Zagreb and was a student of Marija Kostrenčić , who was also the teacher of the soprano Zinka Milanov . Further vocal studies led from Milinkovic to Vienna .

As an opera singer she made her debut at the Zagreb Opera House in 1935 as Erda in the Yugoslav premiere of the opera Das Rheingold by Richard Wagner . From 1937 to 1940 Georgine von Milinkovic was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Zurich City Theater . There she sang the role of Countess Helfenstein in the world premiere of the opera Mathis der Maler by Paul Hindemith in 1938 . In 1940 she was engaged at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich . From 1945 to 1948 she was engaged at the Prague State Opera . During this time they continued to perform in Munich and Vienna. In 1948 Georgine von Milinkovic finally became a permanent member of the ensemble of the two state operas in Munich and Vienna.

She was a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival . In 1952 she starred in Salzburg in the world premiere of the opera Die Liebe der Danae by Richard Strauss as Alcmene with. In 1952 she sang Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . 1959 followed the housekeeper in the opera Die Schweigsame Frau , also by Richard Strauss, at the side of Fritz Wunderlich , Hermann Prey , Hilde Güden and Hans Hotter . From 1954 to 1957 Georgine von Milinkovic was a permanent member of the Bayreuth Festival . There she took on both the great mezzo-soprano and alto roles in Richard Wagner's musical dramas , as well as smaller roles: from 1954 to 1957 she sang every year Fricka in Der Ring des Nibelungen , as well as Grimgerde in 1954, 1955 and 1957, and Siegrune in 1956 The Valkyrie . In 1954, 1955 and 1957 she interpreted the Second Norn in Götterdämmerung . In 1956/1957 she also sang Magdalene in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg .

Georgine von Milinkovic appeared at the Vienna State Opera in over 500 performances in 23 different roles between 1948 and 1969 . She sang mainly the great dramatic mezzo-soprano roles in the operas of Giuseppe Verdi (Azucena, Maddalena, Princess Eboli, Amneris) and Richard Strauss (Herodias, Klytämnestra). Other main roles were the title role in Carmen by Georges Bizet , as well as Ortrud in Lohengrin and the Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner. Comical roles and character roles were added later in Vienna.

She appeared at the Grand Opéra Paris (1952 as Herodias, 1953 as Brangäne), at the Teatro San Carlos in Lisbon (1952 as Herodias), at the Opera of Monte Carlo (1952 as Herodias), at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna (1954 as Rheingold -Fricka), at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (1954 as Brangäne) and at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo (1955 as Kundry). She had great success in the 1957/1958 season at the Covent Garden Opera in London as Klytämnestra and as Fricka.

Georgine von Milinkovic remained a permanent member of the State Operas in Munich and Vienna until 1968. With the role of Marcellina she bid farewell to her Munich audience in the Cuvilliés Theater in 1968 . She was last heard in October 1969 at the Vienna State Opera, again as Marcellina.

Georgine von Milinkovic's musical oeuvre, passed down through radio recordings, live recordings and records, has been partially re-released on CD in recent years.
