Franz Stimming
Franz Stimming (born November 19, 1884 in Berlin ; † May 3, 1952 there ) was a German politician ( USPD , SPD ).
Life
After attending primary school (1891 to 1899), Stimming completed a four-year apprenticeship as a book printer. In 1903 he joined the Association of German Book Printers and became a member of the SPD. From 1908 to 1912 Stimming was chairman of the local SPD association in Neuenhagen and the surrounding area. In 1910 he became a community representative in Petershagen on the Ostbahn .
Stimming took part in the First World War as a soldier from 1915 to 1917 . After that he worked in the arms industry. In the January strike of 1918, he took part as a strike leader at Siemens , and was therefore dismissed and called up again. He deserted and was arrested, but after serving his pre-trial detention for treason in Moabit, he was released through an amnesty in October 1918. In November he led a demonstration of Lichtenberg workers in Berlin.
In 1919 Stimming joined the USPD and worked for their newspaper Freiheit . In the same year he became a city councilor of the USPD and unpaid city councilor in Lichtenberg . Stimming returned to the SPD in 1922 and became deputy mayor.
After the seizure of power of the Nazis Stimming was suspended in 1933 from his post and arrested multiple times. In 1934 he was imprisoned in the Esterwegen concentration camp for eight months . From 1936 he worked in his son's wallpaper and paint business in Berlin-Reinickendorf .
On May 2, 1945, Stimming took over the office of district mayor in Lichtenberg. The Soviet city commandant Colonel General Nikolai Bersarin confirmed him in his position on May 10th. At Ulbricht's insistence , after only five weeks in office, on June 14, Stimming was replaced by the Soviet military administration from this post. The KPD leadership blamed Stimming for the violent clashes between communists and social democrats that had occurred during his time as deputy mayor before 1933 at the annual marches in honor of Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg at the central cemetery in Friedrichsfelde .
Honors
In February 2010, the district assembly of Lichtenberg decided to name a new traffic route in the district of Berlin-Karlshorst after Stimming.
