Franz Windhager (painter)

Franz Windhager (born December 3, 1879 in Vienna ; † June 14, 1959 there ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .

Life

Franz Windhager studied at the Vienna Academy with Christian Griepenkerl and Franz Rumpler and from 1900 onwards at the Academy in Karlsruhe with Ludwig Schmid-Reutte . Study trips took him through Germany and Italy . In 1909 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus . Windhager worked as a painter and illustrator (e.g. Grillparzer , Der arme Spielmann , 1913).

During the First World War , Windhager worked as a war painter in the Russian and Italian theater of war .

In the post-war period, Windhager continued to work in Vienna and painted, among other things, building views. He was also known for his colorful genre paintings . He also worked under the name Franz Reichar (d) t or Franz Reichardt-Windhager. He was buried at the Hietzinger Friedhof in Vienna.
