Franz Woken

Franz Woken, also: Franz Wokenius, Franciscus Wokenius (* 1685 in Rarfin ; † February 18, 1734 in Wittenberg ) was a German educator, historian, linguist and Lutheran theologian.

Life

Woken came from an old Pomeranian family of preachers. His great-grandfather Bartholomäus had studied with Martin Luther at the University of Wittenberg and had become a pastor. His grandfather Daniel was also a pastor like his father Franz. One year before the birth of Franz, the father received the pastor's position in Rarfin. He had the daughter of his predecessor Georg Pistori, Maria Hedwig, geb. Pistori, married.

His date of birth cannot be determined; Tradition has it that he was born with a twin brother who died soon after birth. During the first years of his life he was in the care of his father, who also imparted knowledge of languages to him, among other things. He then attended school in Kolberg and acquired extensive philosophical knowledge.

Woken then moved to the University of Rostock , but was immediately called back to his father. After staying in his homeland in Pomerania, he enrolled at the University of Halle . After a while he moved to the University of Leipzig , where Gottfried Olearius and Johann Georg Abicht were his teachers; they gave him insights into theology and oriental languages.

Then he taught as a tutor . With the dissertation De disserentia he received the philosophical master's degree on February 8, 1714 . Originally he wanted to do his habilitation at the university ; However, he went back to his homeland, where he became a teacher at the grammar school in Neustettin . On July 30, 1714 he was appointed deputy principal ; In this position he tried to remedy the grievances at the high school. He met resistance, so that he soon looked around for a new job.

On April 15, 1725 , he completed his habilitation at the University of Leipzig and took up the position of associate professor of philosophy on April 26 with the dissertation De arbore philosophiae . In Leipzig he gave various lectures, graduated with a baccalaureate in theology and wrote several books. Thereupon the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences noticed him and accepted him as a member.

In 1727, after the death of Johann Christoph Wichmannshausen , he was appointed full professor of Hebrew and Oriental languages at the University of Wittenberg . In 1728 he acquired the academic degree of a licentiate in theology, with the dissertation De Incornatione filii . On July 10, 1729, he gave the eulogy for Gottlieb Wernsdorf the Elder at the public funeral .

After he had held the post of rector of the University of Wittenberg since Easter 1732, he received his doctorate in theology on September 2, 1732 .

At the beginning of 1734 he fell ill with a fever and died of it six weeks later.

In Wittenberg he married Magdalene Elisabeth, the daughter of Wichmannshausen and widow of Johann Wilhelm Jahn . With her he had four sons: Franz, Franz Christoph, Franz Christlieb and Augustin Gottfried, three of whom died early.

Woken was extensively well read and especially well versed in the field of oriental languages. As a zealot for Lutheran high orthodoxy , he wrote a few things himself. His books deal with biblical criticism, hermeneutics , oriental literature, ecclesiastical antiquities, dogmatics , philosophical and Christian ethics , logic, aesthetics , church history , literary history and the history of Pomerania .

With his "Bibliotheca Theologico - Philologico - Philosophico Historica" he published the first literary sheet from Wittenberg that is similar to the reviewing journals. In the six-part volume, in addition to the advertisement of the academic writings published in Wittenberg, reviews were also included and notes communicated.
