Franz Zoller (painter)
Franz Zoller (born February 10, 1726 in Gufidaun , † March 4, 1778 in Vienna ) was an Austrian baroque painter .
Life
Franz Zoller was the son of the innkeeper Anton Zoller and his wife Elisabeth, b. Kirin. At a young age he went to Vienna, where his older brother Johann Baptist lived. In 1740 he is mentioned in the files of the Vienna Academy . Nothing is known about his training; he probably worked in a painting workshop at first. In 1748 he worked as an assistant to Paul Troger on the frescoes in Brixen Cathedral . In the 1750s he worked in the Waldviertel . In 1760 he submitted his recording piece, a St. Hieronymus joined the academy to become a real member. He died unmarried and childless in 1778 in Vienna.
Zoller created altar leaves and frescoes for churches in Vienna and Lower Austria. He belongs to the last generation of representatives of the Viennese academy style, which was largely influenced by Paul Troger and Michelangelo Unterberger . His works are very much oriented towards Troger's painting style, he hardly shows any independent painterly development, especially with the frescoes. He often took motifs from Troger's frescoes.
