Life

After studying law, Franz von Gernerth first worked in the Hungarian judiciary and from 1860 in the Austrian judicial service, where he last worked as a judge at the Higher Regional Court in Vienna . As an author, he wrote articles for the music magazine “Orpheus” published by August Schmidt from 1840–42, as well as song texts;

Gernerth is still known today for his text version of the waltz On the beautiful blue Danube . Since the original verses by Josef Weyl were too closely related to current events, the work was rarely performed in the choir version. As a member of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein to which Johann Strauss (son) had dedicated this work, he composed a new text in 1889, which now also took into account the title of the waltz and helped the work to rebirth. The first performance , in Gernerth's words, took place on July 2, 1890 on the occasion of a summer song table of the association in Dreher Park in Meidling .

In old age he suffered from increasing weak eyesight. Gernerth was married to a sister of the writer Andreas Freiherr von Stifft . His grave is in the Hietzinger Friedhof .

"Danube so blue"

Text for the 1st waltz by Franz von Gernerth, 1889.

Danube, so blue
through valley and meadow,
you swayed there
our Vienna greets you,
your silver ribbon,
ties land to land,
and happy hearts beat
on your beautiful beach.
Far from the Black Forest
you rush to the sea
donate blessings
anyway,
your run goes eastward,
take in a lot of brothers:
Image of unity for all time.
See old castles
down from the heights,
like to say hello
you from afar,
and the wreath of mountains,
bright from the dawn
are reflected in your waves dance.
