Franz von Retz

Franz von Retz (* around 1343 in Retz , Lower Austria ; † September 8, 1427 in Vienna ) was a Dominican and theologian.

Life

Between 1365 and 1371 Franz von Retz studied at the University of Vienna . After successfully completing his degree, he taught as a Sententiarius and was later awarded a master's degree and doctor theologiae in 1388 .

As Duke Albrecht III. founded the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna with effect from February 21, 1384 , he appointed Franz von Retz together with Heinrich von Langenstein and Heinrich Totting von Oyta as lecturers. Until 1424 he taught at the University of Vienna and was dean of the theological faculty five times . He was Johannes Nider's teacher .

Franz von Retz reformed the Dominican order in Germany and oriented himself a. a. on the theories of Raimund von Capun . He also acted several times as the university's spokesman (negotiator) towards the sovereign. He is regarded as the third founder of the Dominican Convention in Retz. He was also vicar general of the Austrian and Reformed Hungarian monasteries.

Together with Petrus Deckinger, he represented the university at the Council of Pisa in 1409 and participated in the preparations for the Council of Constance .

In 1427 he died in the name of holiness.
