from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich von Langenstein ( Heinrich Heinbuche , also Heinrich von Hessen the Elder ; * 1325 in Langenstein near Marburg (Hessen), † February 11, 1397 in Vienna ) was a German theologian , church politician and astronomer . He taught at the Paris Sorbonne and from 1384 at the young University of Vienna , for whose reorganization he was responsible.

Life

Heinrich von Langenstein studied in Paris in 1358. At the Sorbonne he received the chair of philosophy in 1363 and rose to become vice-chancellor . He stood in the Great Western Schism (1378-1447) on the side of Pope Urban VI. and proposed the convening of a council. Therefore he had to leave his position and finally France in 1382. In the following year Heinrich stayed for a long time in the Eberbach monastery , whose abbot Jakob von Eltville was also professor at the Sorbonne until 1372.

In 1384 he became professor of theology at the University of Vienna (founded in 1365) , but also taught astronomy . The astronomical tower was set up for observations at the then seat of the university, the Herzogskolleg . Langenstein was rector of the university in 1393/94.

A collection of astronomical tables published by Georg Tannstetter in 1514 contains as a preface a history of Viennese mathematicians and astronomers from 1384 to 1514 - see Viri Mathematici . This history of science begins with Langenstein under his Latin name Henricus de Hassia Germanus .
