Fred Gerard

Fred Gérard (born March 18, 1924 in Besançon , † December 26, 2012 in Ivry-sur-Seine ) was a French jazz trumpeter (also arranger and composer ) of swing and light music .

Live and act

At the end of the 1940s, Fred Gérard played in the swing orchestras of Alix Combelle (1948/49, 1953), Jacques Hélian (1949–51), Aimé Barelli (1951), and with Django Reinhardt , Noël Chiboust and Hubert Rostaing (1953 ). His role models included Louis Armstrong , Jonah Jones , Roy Eldridge and Charlie Shavers . In 1953 Gérard had the post of first trumpeter in the orchestra of the Paris Lido .; under his own name ( Orchestra Fred Gérard ) he recorded light music for Ducretet Thomson in 1959 ("Mon Homme"). In the early 1960s he directed the ensemble Five Trumpets (with Roger Guérin and Henri Van Haeke, among others ); appeared at festival a. a. the EPs Trompette insolite, Fred Gerard sa trompette et ses Five Trumpet's and Fred Gérard et sa Trompette . In the field of jazz he was involved in 53 recording sessions between 1950 and 1975. a. with Gigi Gryce , Jack Diéval , Eddie Barclay , Pierre Michelot and Maxim Saury . He also played with Christian Chevallier (1955–59), André Persiani (1955–58), Claude Bolling (1956–57), Michel Legrand (1956–57), Martial Solal (1956–58), Géo Daly , Lucky Thompson , Michel de Villers and Harry Belafonte (1959); In the following decades he also worked with Judy Garland (1960), Pierre Michelot (1963), Dany Doriz (1966), the Paris Jazz All Stars around Ivan Jullien (1966), Jean-Claude Naude (1967), and also with Sonny Gray (1970), Slide Hampton (1970) and Claude Luter (1972).

In his later years he was a member of the Hot Club de Lyon ; In the early 1990s he played in Michel Laplace's Trumpet Workshop, for which he also composed. Fred Gérard was also active as a music teacher and wrote the textbook Approche Méthodique Moderne (1985). His students included u. a. Gilles Zabezinski .
