The famous Soulsisters, Fred Kellner

Fred Kellner and the famous Soulsisters is a German band that has existed since 1988 and performs cover versions of classics of soul and funk music in live shows. The group is a project of professional musicians and comedians who appear together as Fred Kellner for a few weeks each year.

history

Founding members in 1988 were a circle of friends from Koblenz around Ralf Günther (bass guitar) and Herbert Jösch (drums). Anke Engelke and her sister Susanne joined them in 1989 and have since been singing as “The Famosen Soulsisters” with Fred Kellner. Performances in the Koblenz Café Hahn were followed by regular shows in Rhineland-Palatinate and southern North Rhine-Westphalia , including in Cologne's Stadtgarten . Although Fred Kellner also appears nationwide, the Rhineland and Rhineland-Palatinate remained the focus of the annual tour. The brass section “The Kellner Horny Horny Horns” and most recently the string section “The SuperSonic Silver Strings” have strengthened the regular line-up since the 1990s.

show

The band rarely performs outside of the annual tour. The tour itself lasts two weeks and is temporally linked to the carnival , although the band is not artistically located near this festival. The musicians always appear under the alter ego "Fred Kellner", so that the members of the regular seven-person cast all have the same name on stage.

The band members wear 1960s and 1970s style costumes. The sequence is carried out by the English-German announcements of the bassist Ralf Günther, who loudly announces new highlights and sensations with humorous exaggerations. Stereotypes from performances by other artists are exaggerated, such as the exhausted collapse, discharge and return to the stage of James Brown , as well as allusive announcements of "Sexy Soulman", "The Grandfather of Soul" or the "Hardest Working Man in Show" Business ".

The legend, cultivated from the beginning, serves as a running gag , according to which all the great soul hits were actually composed by Fred Kellner and relatives like " Ike Kellner ", " Earth Wind & Kellner ", or " The Kellner Five " either plagiarized the songs or cheaply bought to become famous. Another constant style element of the band, which plays with up to 15 musicians, are typical funky jingles between the pieces.

music

The typical line-up of a show includes pieces from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s from the genres of soul and funk and pop music . Pieces by Earth, Wind and Fire , Kool & The Gang , Prince , Diana Ross , Boney M , Lipps, Inc. , Chaka Khan , Johnny Guitar Watson , Sheila E. , Ashford & Simpson , Jackson Five , Michael Jackson , Norman Whitfield or Barrett Strong . Sound and arrangements are close to the contemporary original recordings and interpretations.
