Fred Rompelberg (born October 30, 1945 in Maastricht ) is a former Dutch cyclist . He set eleven world records behind motor vehicles .
Athletic career
In 1971 Fred Rompelberg became a professional racing cyclist. Until the 1990s, he was mainly active as a stalker . In 1977 he became Dutch champion in this discipline behind pacemaker Norbert Koch . He then started at the Stayer World Championships and finished fifth behind Joop Stakenburg .
On October 3, 1995, the almost 50-year-old Rompelberg reached a speed of 268 km / h on the Bonneville Flats in the Great Salt Flats of Utah in the USA , driven behind a special dragster vehicle with a huge wind hood at the rear. This exceeded the world record set by the American John Howard in 1985 , who had achieved a speed of 245 km / h at the time. Between 1975 and 1995 he set a total of eleven world speed records behind motor vehicles. In 1988 he had a serious accident in one of these record attempts.
Fred Rompelberg has been organizing cycling holidays on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca since 1993 .
