Freddie Deronde

Freddie Deronde (* 20th September 1938 in Brussels ; † 6. January 2012 in Wavre ) was a Belgian jazz - bassist .

Deronde began to play the guitar autodidactically at the age of nine; In 1955 he took part in the young talent competition of the Hot Club de Belgique and won the Django Reinhardt Prize. He then switched to the bass guitar and finally, under the influence of Benoît Quersin, to the double bass. His career as a professional musician began in the orchestra of the trumpeter Al Goyens , with whom he also gave concerts in the bases of the US armed forces in West Germany. 1960 worked in the International Jazz Quartet with the baritone saxophonist Lennart Jansson, Lloyd Miller and drummer George Solano, with whom he performed in Belgium and at the Comblain Jazz Festival . After his return to Brussels, he performed jam sessions at Club La Rose Noire in the early 1960s . a. with guest US-Americans such as Bud Powell and musicians from the Quincy Jones band such as Phil Woods , Clark Terry , Sahib Shihab , Jerome Richardson and Melba Liston . Since 1961 he has played in the trio of the Dutch pianist Jack van Poll , with whom he a. a. 1963 performed at the Antibes Jazz Festival .

In the mid-1960s he integrated American role models such as Red Mitchell , Percy Heath , Paul Chambers and especially Scott LaFaro into his game. In the following years he toured a. a. with René Thomas , Stu Martin and Chet Baker ; he also accompanied Joe Henderson , Lee Konitz , Stuff Smith , Al Cohn , Zoot Sims , Don Byas and Hank Mobley in Belgium . In 1968/69 he gave concerts at the Montreux Jazz Festival with Philip Catherine , in 1970 with Stu Martin and Etienne Verschueren . That same year he was involved in Catherine's album Stream with Jiggs Whigham and Marc Moulin . In the early 1970s he also worked with Jean-Luc Ponty's Experience , Chet Baker, Robin Kenyatta , Michel Herr ( Ouverture Eclair , 1973) and Clifford Jordan . In the 1980s he accompanied guest American musicians such as Art Taylor , Ted Curson , Jon Eardley , Pepper Adams and JR Monterose ; He also played in Philip Catherine and Marc Moulin's jazz rock formation Casino Railway . In 1981 he performed with his own band at the Cascais Jazz Festival in Portugal. In the mid-1980s he had to interrupt his career due to illness before he went on several US tours with JR Monterose. In 1989 he recorded the album Spontaneous Effort ( Igloo ) under his own name , in which Monterose, Philip Catherine, Michel Herr and the drummer Jan De Haas participated. In the 1990s he played in a trio with Diederik Wissels or Michel Herr and Dré Pallemaerts and also with Erwin Vann , Bert Joris , Peter Hertmans and Jan De Haas. In 1994/95 he put together a piano-less quartet with Gino Lattuca, Jacques Pirotton and De Haas based on the example of René Thomas' band with Chet Baker. In 2004 he took part in a tribute concert for Scott LaFaro.

He died in January 2012 in the Bois de la Pierre hospital in Wavre.
