He attended Yale University's art school , but found football and boxing more interesting than art. Then, when his father died, he returned home to take a ministry in Albany, New York . Soon he made his first foray west and became a businessman in Kansas City . He married Eva Caten in 1884 and studied with the Art Students' Union in New York City . Soon he began producing illustrations, sketches and other work for western publications. Much of his early work appeared in Collier's Weekly and Harper's Weekly .

Though world famous for his many depictions of the American West, Remington only visited the region for a few short months. He got there just in time to take pictures of the western United States before the area lost its pristine condition from the suppression of the wilder elements and the influence of civilization, and the border guards' way of life was ended.

In 1890 Remington moved to New Rochelle, New York for more space to live and work. Towards the end of his life he moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut.

In 1898 Remington was a war correspondent and illustrator of the Spanish-American War . He was hired to provide illustrations for William Randolph Hearst . While he was quickly bored with the task, he witnessed the attack on Mount San Juan by US forces, including that led by Theodore Roosevelt .

Frederic Remington died after an emergency appendix operation that resulted in peritonitis . His extreme obesity may have resulted in his abdominal problems. Remington is described by contemporaries as a bon vivant who was just as passionate about eating and drinking as painting. Its 134 kg weight is guaranteed.

In 1891 Frederic Remington was elected Associate Member ( ANA ) of the National Academy of Design . In 1898 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
