action

The now 17-year-old Jesse works with his friend Randolph on a research ship for orca whales . The story of the whaling ship Botany Bay is also told. The 10-year-old captain's son Max is taken to sea by his father for the first time, where he is supposed to learn the techniques of whaling . Apparently this profession has a long tradition in Max's family. When he is supposed to kill an orca for the first time with the harpoon , an accident occurs in which he goes overboard and is rescued by the orca Willy. From now on his attitude towards the whales changes. This is reinforced when Jesse spies on Botany Bay in search of evidence of a whaler and is caught by Max, which leads to the two becoming friends and Jesse showing him the true nature of the whales.

In the end they chase the whaler with their research ship and ram him before Willy can be killed with the harpoon. Max's father goes overboard and gets caught in a fishing net that is slowly beginning to sink. He appears to be drowning while desperately trying to get out of the net with the help of a knife. At the last moment he is rescued by Willy, as the orca brings the net with Max's father back over the surface of the water . Randolph and Jesse pull him out of the water, whereupon he admits he was wrong about whales. The whaler's crew is arrested by the coast guard who has already arrived . At the end of the film it turns out that Willy is going to be a father.

criticism

A loveless family film at the level of American television entertainment, which does not even match the previous films in terms of photographic quality and finally domesticated the“ free Willy ”. "
