Frei-Weinheim (also Ingelheim-Nord ) is a district of the district town of Ingelheim am Rhein in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate . Until 1939, today's district was an independent local community. In the Middle Ages, the place was an important port for the imperial palace in Nieder-Ingelheim and part of the Ingelheimer Grund .
geography
Frei-Weinheim is located on the Rhine at river kilometer 519, 81 m above sea level. NN up to 88 m above sea level NN it forms the northern border of the district. Until the incorporation of Heidesheim am Rhein into Ingelheim in 2019, the local district was Ingelheim's only access to the Rhine. Frei-Weinheim extends from the Rhine further south to the A 60, which can also be seen as the border between Ingelheim-West and Frei-Weinheim. Bingen am Rhein and Gau-Algesheim border the district to the west . Separated from the Rhine, on the right bank of the Rhine is Oestrich-Winkel and Geisenheim . In the inner city, Sporkenheim borders southwest , Ingelheim-West south, Nieder-Ingelheim southeast and Heidesheim am Rhein to the east border Frei-Weinheim.
geology
The banks of the Rhine are characterized by alluvial forests . Limestone sand dunes can be found further south in the urban area, near the motorway. These earth formations are under nature protection according to the Rhineland-Palatinate state maintenance law. Their damage or removal is considered an irreparable interference with nature and the landscape.
history
In Roman times, a ferry station is suspected on the banks of Frei-Weinheim, the ferry was connected to the Roman road Mainz-Bingen and Trier with a road further east of today's Rheinstrasse. There was also a villa rustica in the Rahnacker corridor . The Franconian settlement was founded in the 6th century.
The first documentary mention of Frei-Weinheim dates from the year 772. A certain Hrodolt gave his property in Wihinheim to the Fulda monastery in that year .
The history of the former fishing village is closely linked to that of the port there, where in the Middle Ages mainly wine from the Palatinate hinterland was loaded and wood was landed for the population. However, it was only a small port, the importance of which as a transshipment point for goods was not that great.
The port of the Kaiserpfalz of Nieder-Ingelheim was also here in the Carolingian times. From 1190 Frei-Weinheim was in the fiefdom index of Werner II von Bolanden. In 1375 it was given to the Electoral Palatinate as a pledge . The first mention of a crane at the Frei-Weinheim harbor dates from 1348. The right to maintain this crane for shipping and trade on the Rhine was a thorn in the side of the cities of Mainz and Bingen, which also had crane rights .
Elector Friedrich I of the Palatinate campaigned for the right of the place to have a crane, but it could not hold out in the long run and was torn down. A ferry across the Rhine was also in operation during the Middle Ages. The village received market rights in 1493.
From 1648 Frei-Weinheim belonged together with the rest of the Ingelheimer Grund to the Electoral Palatinate territory. From 1770 to 1772 there was a fruit market next to the wine and grain market. The first Rhine dam was built in the 15th century. However, the Rhine dam could not prevent the destructive floods of 1737, 1751 and 1784 and was rebuilt in the 19th century. The flood of 1784 in particular destroyed a large part of the building fabric. The last major flood hit Frei-Weinheim in 1883. The French rule from 1797 to 1814 made a decisive contribution to the decline of the port near Frei-Weinheim, which only gained importance again with the Industrial Revolution and which continued to be important until the 1970s.
In 1899 the Frei-Weinheim chemical factory was founded by Dr. Hermann Bopp and Odernheimer founded. She made white lead, paints and white lacquer. It was dismantled in 1945 after the Second World War and no longer used. The property was contaminated with lead until the 2000s and had to be rehabilitated.
In 1939 Frei-Weinheim was united as a district together with Sporkenheim, Nieder-Ingelheim and Ober-Ingelheim to form the city of Ingelheim am Rhein, which was also confirmed by the democratic city council after the war. In the 1950s, the area east of Rheinstrasse was developed. Today the port is only a transshipment point for sand and gravel and is livened up by the ferry connection to the Rheingau (Hesse) that still exists today and by the local gastronomy.
religion
Before the Reformation there was a parish in Frei-Weinheim. In 1330 Rudolf von Rotenstein, provost in the collegiate monastery of Maria zu den Staffeln in Mainz, presented to the provost of St. Viktor's monastery in Mainz , son of Wolframs von Löwenstein, to the parish of Frei-Weinheim. The parish church was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. It was located in the Archdiocese of Mainz , was under the Archdeaconate of the Provost of St. Maria im Felde outside of Mainz and belonged to the Deanery Partenheim.
In the course of the Reformation, the Catholic population of Frei-Weinheim was assigned to the parish of Nieder-Ingelheim . In the Palatinate church division in 1705, the Catholic Church fell to the Catholics, but the parish was not rebuilt. The Protestant community in Frei-Weinheim only got its own church on Rheinstrasse in 1910.
