Friedmar Apel (born September 7, 1948 in Osterode am Harz ; † October 21, 2018 in Bielefeld ) was a German literary scholar , Germanist and writer. He taught comparative literature at Bielefeld University .

life and work

Apel studied general and comparative literature, philosophy and English in Berlin and Bloomington (Indiana) . He received his doctorate in 1977 with a study on the theory and history of the art fairy tale and habilitated in 1981 at the TU Berlin on literary translation . After visiting professorships in Berlin, Atlanta , Siegen and Regensburg , he was appointed professor of comparative literature at the University of Paderborn in 1987 . In 2000 he took over the chair for German literature in a European context at Bielefeld University .

Apel's research interests were primarily in the literature of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He published books on the semiotics of fashion and motorcycling, on the “German landscape”, on the angelic conception of romanticism and its expression in artistic and literary works, as well as a short biography of Hugo von Hofmannsthal . He regularly wrote reviews in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and edited numerous books, including several volumes with Erich Fried's Shakespeare translations in the Wagenbach publishing house and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's aesthetic writings in the Insel publishing house . As co-editor he was responsible for the complete edition of Ror Wolf's works .

In his novel Das Buch Fritze (2003), Apel dealt with his childhood in Eichsfeld and the drug death of his younger brother. With Nanette's memory , he presented a Berlin key novel in 2009 .

He died in October 2018 at the age of 70. He was married and had four children.
