Friedrich Alexander Bischoff

Friedrich Alexander Bischoff von Klammstein (born May 18, 1928 in Vienna ; † January 14, 2009 there ) was an Austrian East Asian scholar - sinologist , Tibetologist and Mongolist .

biography

Bischoff studied Sinology, Indology and Tibetology at the Universities of Paris (1947–1950) and Hamburg (1951–1952). He then completed his dissertation with Marcelle Lalou (1980–1967) at the University of Paris on Tibetan and Chinese manuscripts that Paul Pelliot had captured in Dunhuang .

Bischoff studied at the Academy of Sciences of the Mongolian People's Republic (1956–1957) and at the University of Beijing . He then did his doctorate with a second dissertation on the Hanlin Academy under Robert des Rotours (1891–1980) at the University of Paris.

In 1961 Bischoff became a lecturer in Tibetan at the University of Bonn , from 1962 to 1963 he stayed at Waseda University in Tokyo , in 1964 he became professor of Tibetology and Sinology at Indiana University in Bloomington and a consultant at the Kinsey Institute . From 1982 to 1993, Bischoff was Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at the University of Hamburg . After his retirement he was honorary professor of the Mongolian language and cultural history at the University of Vienna , where he also taught classical Chinese .

Bischoff published numerous articles on Sinology, Monglistics, Tibetology and Buddhist studies. One of his most important works was Interpreting the fu , which went back to his 17 years in Indiana seminars, which were based on the Cursus litteraturæ sinicæ neo-missionariis accommodatus by Angelo Zottoli (1826-1902) and mainly on the corresponding chapter in Wen xin diao long 文心雕龍 obtained from Liu Xie . In this publication, Bischoff examines various levels of interpretation of the works discussed. In The Songs of the Orchis Tower , Bischoff examines sexual allusions and metaphors in poems by Wang Xizhi .
