Friedrich Bothe (historian)

Friedrich Bothe (born March 3, 1869 in Nöschenrode ; † September 13, 1952 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German teacher and historian .

life and work

During his studies in 1888 Bothe became a member of the Palaeomarchia Halle Landsmannschaft . After completing his studies, he taught German, history, fencing, swimming and gymnastics at the Liebig School in Frankfurt am Main from 1900 to 1932 . In 1922 he was appointed senior teacher . He earned his real merits with his research and publications on the history of the city of Frankfurt am Main .

His book History of the City of Frankfurt am Main, first published in 1913 (reissued in revised versions in 1923 and 1929, re-published several times unchanged since then) became a standard work. Other focal points of his work were the financial and economic history of the city. In 1939, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, he donated two of Adam Elsheimer's paintings , The City of Frankfurt am Main Seen from the South and Little Tobias, which he had identified .

In 1929 Bothe received the plaque of honor from the city of Frankfurt am Main , and on his retirement in 1932 the silver honor box for his services as a teacher. In 1939 the Frankfurt Association for History and Regional Studies made him an honorary member. His grave is in the Frankfurt main cemetery .
