Friedrich Ernst Wolperding (born April 1, 1815 in Kiel , † August 17, 1888 in Kiel) was a German landscape painter .

life and work

A small scholarship from the Danish Crown Prince made it possible for Wolperding to attend the Art Academy in Copenhagen from 1831 . His classmates and friends included Louis Gurlitt , Johannes Mohr, Hermann Carmiencke, Adolf Carl and Curt Grolig. Study trips took him to the area around Kiel, Hamburg and Dresden . In 1836 and 1838 he toured Norway .

In his early work, Wolperding specialized in nocturnal lighting effects such as moonlight and torchlight or burning houses and mills. In 1838 Wolperding returned to Kiel and tried in vain to establish himself as an artist. In May 1839 he went to Munich and was among the Scandinavian and North German artists around Christian Morgenstern . In 1839 Wolperding joined the Münchner Kunstverein and exhibited some genre motifs and landscape paintings here.

The revival of art funding in his hometown with the construction of the first art hall and the founding of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association led him back to Kiel in 1845. Wolperding now turned exclusively to the landscape of the Kiel area and East Holstein . The Schleswig-Holstein survey of 1848 brought art life in Schleswig-Holstein to a standstill, so that Wolperding was forced to accept the position of drawing teacher at the Kiel School of Academics , which he held until 1884. In 1861 he applied in vain to succeed the Nazarene Theodor Rehbenitz as a drawing teacher at Kiel University . During the German-Danish War of 1864 he worked as an illustrator for the gazebo . Wolperding was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 .
