Friedrich Ludwig Engels
Karl Friedrich Gottfried Ludwig Engels (born June 12, 1790 in Hamm , † October 26, 1855 in Cologne ) was a Prussian major general and commander of Cologne.
Life
origin
He was the son of Hofrat Bernhard Ludwig Engels and his wife Friederike Luise Christiane, née Stein.
Military career
Engels joined the Bergische infantry as a musketeer in 1808 and became Sousleutnant there at the end of the year . As such, he took part in the sieges of Girona and Tarragona and the battles near Vic in 1809/10 in conjunction with the French troops during the campaign in Spain . As an adjoint major, he also took part in Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812 , was wounded in the battle of the Beresina and was awarded the Legion of Honor.
On December 21, 1814 Engels entered Prussian service and was employed as a staff captain in the 17th Infantry Regiment . He was promoted to captain and company commander . With his promotion to major on March 22, 1833, Engels became commander of the 1st battalion in the 16th Landwehr Regiment in Soest . From there, on April 7, 1842, he was transferred to Düsseldorf in the 16th Infantry Regiment . Here he acted as commander of the 1st battalion, was transferred to Stettin on March 22, 1843 , and on March 22, 1845, when he was appointed second in command . In the same function, Engels was transferred to Cologne as a colonel on April 6, 1847, and rose there on April 19, 1851, promoted to major general to the city's first commandant. His achievements were honored on August 5, 1854 by being awarded the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. He died the following year while exercising his service. His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne .

Engels married Clara Friederike Dorothea Hoffmann (1798–1848) on November 15, 1822 in Düsseldorf. The following children were born from the marriage:
