Friedrich Medicus (pomologist)

Friedrich Karl Medicus (born June 28, 1813 in Landshut , † December 18, 1893 in Wiesbaden ) was a German pomologist .

His grandfather Friedrich Casimir Medicus was an agricultural reformer and director of the botanical garden in Mannheim , his father Ludwig Wallrad Medicus switched to Bavarian services after the Electoral Palatinate was dissolved and was most recently professor of agriculture, forestry and technology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.

Medicus himself studied natural sciences in Munich . He later moved to Wiesbaden , where he joined the Agricultural Institute of the Geisberg estate as a lecturer in 1843 and rose to its director in the course of his career. During his teaching activities he published a. a. from the 2nd edition in 1862, together with Eduard Lucas, his standard work The Doctrine of Fruit Growing was reduced to simple laws. A guide for lectures on fruit culture and for self-teaching at Metzler in Stuttgart .

In his adopted home Wiesbaden, the Protestant Medicus was highly committed to social issues. He served as chairman of the Gustav Adolf Foundation and the Foundation for Teacher Orphans and was also a member of his Protestant parish and the Nassau Association for Natural History.
