Ludwig Walrad Medicus

Ludwig Walrad Medicus (often Ludwig Wallrad Medicus , own name also Ludwig Wallrath Medicus ; * August 8, 1771 in Mannheim , † September 18, 1850 in Munich ) was a German university lecturer for forestry and agriculture .

Life

Medicus was the son of Friedrich Casimir Medicus , a botanist, doctor and garden director. He attended the Mannheim grammar school . He then went to Heidelberg University from 1787 or 1798 to 1791 , where he studied economic and political science, but also devoted himself to mining science and undertook study trips to the Harz Mountains , among other things . He then went to the Hamburg Commercial Academy . In 1792 and 1793 he trained in forestry practice with Georg Friedrich von Jaeger and Hofkammerrat Johann Peter Kling (1749–1808). He also used this time to improve his knowledge of the French language and finally to study for eight months at the University of Nancy . In 1794 he went on an extensive study trip through Switzerland, which inspired him to write his work on the Alpine economy.

At the end of 1795, Medicus was appointed associate professor for agriculture and camera encyclopedia at the high camera school of Heidelberg University . In 1796 he was also appointed a real mountain ridge in the Electoral Palatinate with a seat and vote in the Mannheim Oberbergamt. 1802 doctorate him the Heidelberg University to Dr. phil. In the upheavals of the dissolution of the Electoral Palatinate , Medicus accepted a call as a full professor of agriculture and forestry at the University of Würzburg and at the same time turned down an offer from the Baden government.

In the transition from Würzburg to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Medicus followed a call from the Bavarian king to the University of Landshut in 1806 . There he received the chair for agriculture, mining and forestry. He also took on various administrative offices at the university. He was a member of the Senate , a member of the Administrative Committee, from 1812 to 1815 rector of the university and from 1817 to 1818 its prorector . At the State Economics Faculty he also held the office of dean . In 1822, he was given the teaching assignment for technology, civil engineering and commercial science in addition to his existing chair.

When the university was relocated to Munich in 1826, Medicus was entrusted with the chair of agriculture and forestry and technology at the new Munich University , which enabled him to reduce the scope of his teaching again. During this time he was one of the founders of the Agricultural Association .

The pomologist Friedrich Medicus is one of Medicus' sons . The pharmacist Ludwig Medicus was his grandson.
