Friedrich Thoen (* 1559 in Regensburg , † after 1610 , but probably only after 1620 ) was a sculptor of the Renaissance , the predominantly in upper and Lower Austria worked.

Life

Friedrich Thön was born in Regensburg, where he was trained between 1571 and 1576 by the sculptor Hans Pötzlinger († 1603 in Klosterneuburg ). From around 1583 until after 1610 he is recorded in Grieskirchen in Upper Austria as a “citizen and sculptor” and ran a flourishing sculptor's workshop there. Friedrich Thenn , Thener or Thein , sculptor from Grieskirchen and member of the Inner Council, who died before 1660, is likely to be himself or a son of the same name, whose widow Elisabeth (* 1584/85) was buried on January 18, 1660 in Regensburg .

Artistic creation

Thön was a master of relief art who supplied his aristocratic , Protestant clientele with artistically high-quality epitaphs . In addition to the signed grave monuments for Georg Wolfgang von Tannberg († 1582) and Hans Adam Jörger († 1591) in Sankt Georgen bei Grieskirchen , a large number of other tombs are ascribed to him and his workshop, e. B. in Aistersheim (Achaz [† 1603] and Katharina Hohenfeld [† 1608]), Altmünster (Gotthard [† 1584] and Apollonia Schärffenberg [† 1587]), Eferding , Gallspach (Hans Christoph Geymann † 1600), Garsten (Georg Achaz Losenstein † 1597), Grieskirchen (Sigmund [† 1598] and Potentiana Polheim [† 1582]), Münzbach ( Lorenz Schütter † 1599), Schleißheim near Wels (Andreas Gruenthaler † 1597; Hans Dietmar [† 1597] and Magdalena Gruenthaler [† 1595) ]), Stadlkirchen bei Dietach (Georg Neuhaus † 1593), Steyr (Wolf Pfefferl † 1597) and others. Many biblical subjects in his reliefs were based on illustrations from the Bible by Johann Bocksberger and Jost Amman , which was published in Frankfurt am Main in 1564 . Frequent motifs were the "resurrection of the dead" according to the vision of the prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel), "Moses and Paul" as heralds of the old and new faith, the "resurrection of Christ", the "Lord's Supper" and the "adoration of the Christ child".
