Friedrich Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (born November 18, 1668 in Sonderburg ; † June 3, 1714 in Augustenburg Castle ) was a royal Danish major general and head of the Oldenburg regional regiment.

Life

His parents were Duke Ernst Günther from the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg branch of the House of Oldenburg and his wife Auguste von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1633–1701). Friedrich Wilhelm was the youngest of ten children. At the time of his birth, his father had lost his possessions to the Kingdom of Denmark and was only titular duke .

In 1676, at the age of eight, he became provost in Hamburg . He joined the life guards on foot in 1688 as a captain . In the following year he went to the Guard Battalion in English pay and was used in the fight against the insurgents in Ireland in 1689. In 1691 he became a lieutenant colonel in the Queen's Battalion in Ireland. The next year the battalion was relocated to Flanders . On October 17, 1693 he was appointed Colonel and Chief of the Prince Fredrik Battalion in Flanders. After the Peace of Rijswijk in 1697, the battalion returned to Denmark and was re-enlisted in the regiment. The colonel was released with a pension. On June 23, 1701 he was hired again as a brigadier on foot and became chief of the Oldenburg regional regiment. As part of the War of the Spanish Succession , the regiment returned to English pay and was sent to Brabant in 1702 . On January 26, 1706 he was appointed major general there. In the Battle of Ramillies (1706) the battalion stormed the city and in October 1706 took part in the capture of Ath . After the siege of Lille (1708) and the surrender of Marshal Boufflers on October 26, 1708, he became the city's commander. He commanded 25 battalions there. From January 9, 1708 to 1711, he also received a pension from Holland. On January 9, 1708 he handed over his regiment to Hans Philipp Praetorius .

In 1701 he inherited Augustenburg and Rumohrshof, in 1703 he also bought Avnbölhof. After his death in 1714 he was buried in Sønderborg Castle .

He was married to Countess Sophie Amalie von Ahlefeldt zu Langeland (1675–1741), daughter of Count Friedrich von Ahlefeldt , since November 27, 1694 .
