from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prince Friedrich Wilhelm zu Solms-Braunfels (born January 11, 1696 in Braunfels ; † February 24, 1761 ibid) was the first Prince of Solms-Braunfels .

He was the son of Count Wilhelm Moritz zu Solms-Braunfels (1651-1724) and his wife Magdalene Sophie von Hessen-Homburg (1660-1720).

Life

After the death of his father Wilhelm Moritz on February 19, 1724, Friedrich Wilhelm inherited the latter's title and was now Count of Solms-Braunfels, Greifenstein and Hungen , Tecklenburg , Kriechingen and Lingen (Ems) , Herr zu Münzenberg , Wildenfels , Sonnewalde , Püttlingen , Dortweiler and Beaucourt. He enjoyed a befitting upbringing, but was of a sickly nature, so that he did not rule much personally. Nevertheless, he was able to pursue a successful marriage policy so that his children could marry into powerful families in the country.

Financial difficulties forced the city of Butzbach - in family ownership since 1478 - to sell him to Hessen-Darmstadt on March 17, 1741.

On May 22, 1742, Emperor Karl VII elevated the House of Solms-Braunfels to imperial prince .

When Friedrich Wilhelm died in 1761 his eldest son Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst became his successor.
