Prince Friedrich of Hesse

Friedrich Prince of Hesse and the Rhine (born May 13, 1788 in Darmstadt ; † March 16, 1867 in Paris ) was an Imperial Russian major general and Grand Ducal Hessian general of the infantry. His full name was: Friedrich August Karl Anton Aemilius Maximilian Christian Ludwig Prince of Hesse and the Rhine .

Life

ancestry

His parents were Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hesse-Darmstadt (1753-1830) and his wife Luise Henriette Karoline of Hesse-Darmstadt (1761-1829).

biography

He embarked on a military career. In 1796 he was named Imperial Rittmeister in the Austrian army and remained an active soldier until 1806. In 1807 he said goodbye - supposedly for health reasons.

In 1808 the prince converted from the Protestant religion to the Catholic Church (announced in 1811), which is why he had to renounce all inheritance claims and take up residence abroad. He settled in Paris.

In 1813 he joined the French army as a volunteer. In 1814 he worked first as Adjutant Commandant ( Colonel ) in the War Ministry, then as Chief d'Etat Major of the 13th Division, from 1815 as such in the War Ministry. In 1817 Prince Friedrich was promoted to Maréchal de camp (Brigadier General).

Apparently he was transferred to Russian services and there reached the rank of major general . From 1829 he stayed in Portugal , where he actively supported King Michael I in the Miguelista War.

In his homeland, Hessen-Darmstadt , he was appointed lieutenant general in 1852 and infantry general in 1862 . However, since the prince continued to stay abroad, these Hessian military ranks were only honorary titles. As a grand ducal prince he was constitutionally a member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse in the years 1820–1849 and 1856–1867, without ever having made active use of it.

Prince Friedrich died in Paris and is buried in the St. Ludwigs Church in Darmstadt .
