Hans Friedrich Emanuel von Schennis (born June 17, 1852 in Elberfeld , † April 4, 1918 in Berlin ) was a German landscape painter and etcher from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

In his hometown of Elberfeld, where he was one of August von der Heydt's closest friends , the Swiss nobility from Schennis, son of the merchant Friedrich Emanuel von Schennis, received his first artistic training from the portrait and landscape painter Richard Seel . Then he attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy . In the years 1869/1870 he was a pupil in the elementary class of Andreas Müller and the landscape class of Oswald Achenbach . He was also a student of the landscape painter Theodor Hagen , whom he followed in 1871 or 1872 to the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar . He made several study trips to Paris and Italy. From 1888 to 1890 he stayed in Rome , between 1892 and 1904 he lived in Düsseldorf , then in Berlin , where he kept a large private collection of pictures, books, coins and tapestries in his apartment at Lützowplatz 11. Wolfgang Goetz , John Höxter , Else Lasker-Schüler , Erich Mühsam and others described him as a bohemian , grand seigneur , gentleman and dandy . He was awarded a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1899.
