Francis Daniel Barzilauskas (born June 13, 1920 in Waterbury , Connecticut , † November 30, 1990 in Hamden , Connecticut) was an American American football player. He played as a guard in the National Football League (NFL) with the Boston Yanks , the New York Bulldogs and the New York Giants .

Player career

Fritz Barzilauskas studied at the College of the Holy Cross after graduating from high school . After the US entered World War II , he served in the United States Army Air Forces as a pilot of a Martin B-26 Marauder. During a flight over Germany he was shot down over Sinzig and was taken prisoner by Germany . After the war he was discharged as a lieutenant and continued his studies at Yale University , where he played college football for the Yale Bulldogs as a guard. In 1947, after graduating from the Boston Yanks, he was drafted third in the first round . Barzilauskas received an annual salary of 9,000 US dollars and was also used as a guard for the Yanks, with the particular task of blocking running back Bill Paschal the way into the opposing end zone . After the 1948 season, the Yanks stopped the game and Barzilauskas moved to the New York Bulldogs, where he was responsible for protecting quarterback Bobby Layne and serving as a blocker for running back Joe Osmanski . In 1950 Barzilauskas moved to the New York Giants. He was used by coach Steve Owen but only in the 1951 season. After this season he ended his career.

After the career

Barzilauskas returned to Waterbury after his career. He worked there as vice president of a car dealership and was an assistant coach at Yale University. He trained there the freshman of the offensive line . Fritz Barzilauskas was married and had five children. His nephew Carl Barzilauskas was also a professional football player and played for the New York Jets , among others . After his death he was buried in the Central Burying Grounds in Hamden.
