Fritz Heckert was the name of a cruise ship managed by VEB Deutsche Seereederei Rostock , referred to in the GDR language as FDGB - holiday ship . Most recently it was named Gulf Fantasy .
history
On November 28, 1959, the ship was at the Mathias-Thesen-Werft Wismar under the name of solidarity given to Kiel on 25 June 1960 it was launched . It was built as a two-screw passenger ship with an engine room in the middle . A special characteristic of Fritz Heckert was the cruiser stern and the chimney-free design. Most of the passenger cabins in 1960 were designed for two people and only a few for four people. Officers of the ship were accommodated in one-man cabins. After commissioning on April 15, 1961, the Fritz Heckert ran on May 1, 1961 on her maiden voyage under Captain Willi Leidig to Helsinki , Leningrad and Riga . Until it was decommissioned on May 2, 1972, the ship, named after Fritz Heckert , the German politician, co-founder of the Spartakusbund and the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), sailed mainly in the Baltic Sea region , but also traveled to Iceland and the Mediterranean .
Numerous state- owned enterprises (VEB) of the GDR contributed to the financing of the ship with services and financial means; 29.5 million GDR marks were donated by the Hobby Horse movement , among others . The Fritz Heckert was the only new build of a cruise ship in the GDR for the GDR.
The ship was 141.17 meters long, 17.60 meters wide and offered space for 369 passengers. The engine of the 7400 GRT ship developed 10,600 hp. On board the cruise ship with its eight decks were 112 two-bed, 33 three-bed and 14 four-bed cabins, two swimming pools as well as a few restaurants and cultural facilities. Between 1960 and 1972 the ship sailed 494,345 nautical miles , carrying over 63,000 passengers and calling at 59 ports in 24 countries.
Shutdown
After the Fritz Heckert's first voyage , it turned out that the ship rolled very hard and the hull was too soft. Difficulties arose with the complicated machinery, as well as deflections and lack of stability. The greedy ship steered poorly, reports captains who were on duty on the ship. In 1963/64 the steering gear was then rebuilt. The soft construction resulted in cracks in the windows in the middle of the ship. After the damage was repaired, however, it kept reappearing. On February 22, 1971, VEB Deutsche Seereederei Rostock (DSR) took over the management of the ship. From May 2, 1971, the ship was in the Rostock city harbor . On July 6, 1971, it was abducted from Rostock to Wismar, where it served as a barge for DSR employees.
On May 2, 1972, the cruise ship was moored in the seaport of the city of Stralsund as a floating workers' residence of the VEB Volkswerft Stralsund . From April 15, 1982 it was owned by VEB Deutfracht-Seereederei Rostock, which continued to use it as a dormitory in Stralsund, and from 1986 by the VEB Kombinat nuclear power plant “Bruno Leuschner” Greifswald .
The Hamburg company “Gulf Offshore Engineering” became the new owner of the ship at the beginning of 1991 and had the ship converted into a hotel ship. From then on it was used as such under changing owners in the United Arab Emirates under the name Gulf Fantasy . On March 4, 1999, the ship was in Mumbai for scrapping brought.

technology
The Fritz Heckert was the only passenger ship in the world that, in addition to diesel engines, had a gas turbine drive with a free-piston engine . The diesel engines were built by VEB Dieselmotorenwerk Rostock . The gas turbines came from the VEB Turbinenfabrik Dresden. The turbine system was later replaced by technology from SIGMA Venissieux (Lyon). In 1960 the engine output was 2 × 5000 hp.
