Fritz Henn (music teacher)

Fritz Henn (born January 3, 1901 in Heidelberg ; † March 24, 1984 ibid) was a music teacher , conductor and local politician . He worked at the theaters in Heidelberg , Hanover and Mannheim , from 1934 as director of the Heidelberg University of Church Music , which had been founded three years earlier, and from 1955–1968 as director of the Heidelberg-Mannheim transmitter and the Karlsruhe studio of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk in Heidelberg.

Fritz Henn was born into the Roman Catholic merchant family of Friedrich Henn (1868–1953) and his wife Maria, née Zipf, who already aroused his interest in music. He had a sibling. After graduating from high school at the secondary school Heidelberg in 1920, he studied at the University of Law , Economics , from which he graduated in 1924 as well as music . In the same year he received his doctorate. phil. From 1922 to 1928 he was also a répétiteur , choir director and conductor at the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Heidelberg .

In 1928 he left his hometown to become Felix Weingartner's master student in Basel , one year later he was Kapellmeister in Hanover for one season and then until 1933 department head of the orchestra and conductor class at the Mannheim University of Music . From 1934 he took over the management of the University of Church Music in Heidelberg.

In 1929 Fritz Henn married Johanna, née Bendemann (1906–1977), daughter of Lieutenant General Hans Bendemann (1852–1914) and his wife Marie, b. Rothe, with whom he had two children.

In 1945, Henn became the first municipal music director for opera and concerts after the Second World War. Under his directorate, the full reintroduction of the concert and opera business could take place. In addition, the number of posts will be increased considerably. A year later he was involved in the founding of the state-recognized University for Music and Theater in Heidelberg and became its director, which forced him to give up the city's commitment. At the same time he was elected to the local council for the CDU in the legislative periods 1946–1948 and 1953–1959 .

The broadcasting station Heidelberg-Mannheim and the Studio Karlsruhe of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk in Heidelberg engaged Henn as their director in 1955. He held this position until 1968, only to switch back to music education the following year, at the age of 68. The music academy of the state of Baden-Württemberg and the conservatory of the city of Heidelberg were able to engage him for a few years.
