action

A team of scientists consisting of the physics student Crawford Tillinghast and the older Dr. Edward Pretorius experiments with a so-called resonator , which is supposed to stimulate the pineal gland in the brain by means of certain frequencies . Pretorius suspects in it a sense organ that has been lost to mankind, with which one can bring hidden psychic powers to light. In the first test run, however, a gate is created to an unknown parallel dimension through which alien beings penetrate our universe. Pretorius, who was already on the verge of madness at this point, was bitten off by a being. Tillinghast narrowly escapes because he damages the device with an ax, but is suspect number one and of course nobody believes him the stories of beings that exist invisibly next to our reality. The responsible doctor Dr. However, during an ultrasound examination, Katherine McMichaels finds that Tillinghast's pineal gland is enlarged. Together with the police officer Buford "Bubba" Brownlee and the initially reluctant Tillinghast, she wants to repeat the experiment. The attempt succeeds, but everyone involved develops a new kind of sexual pleasure. Even the presumed dead Pretorius reappears, but he is no longer a human being, but a creature that can transform itself into the most perverse nightmare figures with the help of its mind. Tillinghast succeeds in switching off the resonator in time, but Pretorius' power is already so great that he can also control the machine from within its dimensions. A terrible change is also taking place with Tillinghast, whose enlarged pineal gland is gradually causing him to mutate.

Frames

The German version is the R-rated version (81:14 min.), As the MPAA had many of the scenes from the Director's Cut (89:07 min) removed for the American cinema release. On June 10, 2006, the American pay TV broadcaster “Monster HD” broadcast the unrated Director's Cut in HD format. On September 13, 2013, this version was released in Germany on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The film was indexed in Germany until December 2013, but after the 25-year period this was canceled. After a re-examination by the FSK, the film was released uncut from the age of 16.

background

  • From Beyond is based on the short story " Von Jenseits " from 1920. In contrast to the film, the story in the book takes place around 1920. In addition, the film deviates in other points from the original, for example Crawford Tillinghast, the inventor of the resonator, Dr . Pretorius only appears in the film. The story is only about Tillinghast and the narrator. The lust-increasing side effect of the resonator only appears in the film.
  • Dr. Pretorius is on loan from Frankenstein's bride .
  • Dr. Bloch is named after Robert Bloch , the author of Psycho and friend of HP Lovecraft .

Reviews

"The cabinet of horrors of Dr. Pretorius has many horror creatures ready to put a satisfied expression on the face of the popcorn addicted horror fan. It is not a subtle approach to the demons that rage within man. Rather, it is a circus that gives the monkey in humans blood sugar and gives the monsters free rein that gives birth to the suppression of instincts. This is often not pretty to look at - sometimes the popcorn may also take on a gall green color. But the truth must always come out in the end. And the longer she slumbers in the collective bosom, the more gruesome and unsavory is her face! When the slimy tentacles break out of the forehead of Jeffrey Combs or Homo Sapiens, then the rule of cool reason has an end - then the realm of the straitjacket rules. " - Christian Keßler
