European Football Championship 1968 / qualification

    • 31 national teams, which were divided into 8 groups, took part in the qualification for the European Football Championship in 1968 .

    The hosts were only chosen from among the remaining four semi-finalists after qualifying had ended, with Italy selected.

    The qualification was played out in 1966 and 1967 . The two-point rule applied: 2 points were awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a defeat.

    The eight group winners then played in the quarter-finals in the first and second legs, in which the goal difference was decisive for wins for both teams, the four participants of the final round, which was played in the country of one of the four semi-finalists (Italy). The quarter-finals took place in April and May 1968.

    The four British associations met in Group 8, as the qualifying round was also the tournament for the British Home Championship .

    The West German team took part for the first time, but failed in qualifying due to a defeat in Yugoslavia or a final 0-0 in Albania. Scotland, Finland and Cyprus also made their debut and also failed in qualifying.
