Switzerland and Germany were to play the opening game in Strasbourg ( Meinaustadion capacity : 31,600). However, due to the large number of visitors, the organizers moved the meeting to the Prinzenparkstadion in Paris. In front of the almost 27,000 spectators there was not a nice, but an exciting confrontation. After the Swiss determined the game at the beginning, the German team surprisingly took the lead through Gauchel (29th). However, Abegglen III's equalization (43rd) just before the break was well deserved. The second half was determined alternately by the Germans and the Swiss, but remained just like the extra time without a hit. Although the Swiss lost their stamina in the extra time, the draw was okay after Germany left winger Pesser was sent off.
Five days later, both teams met for the playoff at the same place. Half one belonged to the Germans. Hahnemann (8th) scored the 1-0 and an own goal by Lörtscher (22nd) sealed the 2-0 lead of the favorites. But the connection gate through Walaschek (42nd) deeply unsettled Germany. After the change, only Switzerland played because the 'chemistry' within the Herberger team was simply not right. Bickel (64th) and twice the unstoppable Abegglen III (75th and 78th) completed the Swiss success.
