The Stade de la Meinau ( German  Meinau Stadium ) is a football stadium in the French city of Strasbourg and has a capacity of 26,100 spectators. The complex bears the name of the Meinau district , which is located in the southwest of the city.

history

From 1906, the tree-lined square in the Jardin Haemmerlé ( German  Hämmerle Garden ), a city park, was used for football games. FC Neudorf, the predecessor club of Racing Strasbourg , leased the site in 1914 for 300 Reichsmarks and built a wooden grandstand on it. Initially, the area was also used by FC Frankonia, which was displaced from the area after several court hearings.

In 1921 the stadium was renovated and expanded for the first time. In 1938 it experienced its first climax as a venue for the 3rd World Cup . Renovated again after the war , it served the club as the venue for its home games in Ligue 1 , to which the club belonged for several seasons. In 1979 another phase of renovation began with a view to the 1984 European Championship . The previous record was 44,566 spectators in the preliminary round match between Germany and Portugal on June 14, 1984.

There was another record attendance on September 3, 2011: The first home game of Racing Strasbourg in the league CFA 2 against Illzach Modenheim attracted 9,813 spectators. Never before had so many people attended a fifth-rate game.

In May 2019, the club announced at a press conference that the Stade de la Meinau would be extensively renovated. Construction work is scheduled to begin in summer 2021 and continue until early 2024. The construction project is under the direction of the Eurométropole de Strasbourg . It is expected to cost 100 million euros . These are shared by the Eurométropole (EUR 50 million), the Grand Est region (EUR 25 million), the city of Strasbourg and the Bas-Rhin department (EUR 12.5 million each). The number of seats increases to 32,000. After the renovation, 3660 VIP seats will be available. Four fan bars and an area for women only are also planned. In February 2020, five designs and ideas from 45 applicants for the competition launched by the Eurométropole de Strasbourg in October 2019 were shortlisted for the project. The finalists SCAU architecture , the KSS Group , HPP Architects , Populous and 2Portzamparc have until May of the year to submit their proposals. The winner is to be announced with the draft in July 2020.
