Fushë-Kruja ( Albanian  also  Fushë-Krujë ) is a city in central Albania with 18,477 inhabitants (as of 2011). It is located in the municipality of Kruja around 20 kilometers north of the Albanian capital Tirana . Fushë-Kruja is the largest place in the municipality today.

Until 2015, Fushë-Kruja was an independent municipality ( bashkia ) . In 2015 the municipalities of the Kruja district were merged.

View from Fushë-Kruja to the mountains

Fushë-Kruja is located in the coastal plain at the foot of the Skanderbeg Mountains , on the western slope of which the district capital Kruja , about ten kilometers away, sticks. The name Fushë-Krujas, which roughly means Kruja in the field or plain of Kruja , is also derived from this historical town . The place is traversed by the river Zeza (German: the black) , a tributary of the Ishëm coming from the mountains . The coast of the Adriatic Sea is almost 20 kilometers to the northwest.

All road traffic to north and north-east Bania passes Fushë-Kruja, where the roads coming from Tirana and Durrës merge. A newly created expressway leads north from here. It is currently being expanded into a four-lane highway connecting Durrës with Kukës and Kosovo. The railway line of Hekurudha Shqiptare to Shkodra and Montenegro runs a few kilometers west; but an industrial track leads through Fushë-Kruja to a cement factory to the northeast . The only international airport in Albania is only a few kilometers away.

The foundation of the place also has to do with traffic. The Ura e Zezë , the Zeza bridge , was mentioned in a document as early as the 15th or 16th century ; a village of the same name has also existed there since that time. After the Second World War , many displaced people from Kosovo settled in Fushë-Kruja . During this time in Albania the swamps in the coastal plains were drained and the rivers improved, so that new cultivated land was created. A cement factory and other industries were later set up in Fushë-Kruja - on the one hand, so as not to destroy the townscape of Kruja, and on the other hand, because Fushë-Kruja is easily accessible.

Thanks to its location and its proximity to Tirana, Fushë-Kruja is a small regional economic center. There is still a cement factory. In addition, columns of smoke that were visible from afar drew attention to the ovens in lime kilns east of the city. The Albanian furniture industry is concentrated in Fushë-Kruja and the communities to the south : numerous production companies are trying to attract customers, especially from Tirana, with constantly growing shops along the street. Furthermore, Fushë-Kruja is a small market town where residents from the area can stock up on essentials. Since the end of the communist regime in Albania at the beginning of the 1990s, the area around Fushë-Kruja has seen significant immigration of internal migrants from remote rural areas and, as a result, sprawl with heavy building activity outside the old village centers.

Some villages around the city also belong to the local administrative unit of Fushë-Kruja. This includes the village of Halilaj east not far from the road to Kruja, which is known for its Zgërdhesh archaeological site .

American President George W. Bush on his visit in the summer of 2007

The place received the greatest international attention when the American President George W. Bush's watch was allegedly stolen during a short visit. It was astonishing that the world-wide controversial and mostly very well shielded American president took a bath in the crowd in Albania and shook the hands of the residents of Fushë-Kruja. Bush, who actually for a meeting with local small businessmen that financed by an American aid project microcredit had come were given to the city, became the honorary citizen appointed by Fushe-Kruje. As a result, the central square was named after him.

The local football club KS Iliria currently plays in the third highest league, theategoria e dytë .
