The Owl Mountains ( Polish Góry Sowie , Czech Soví hory ) are part of the Silesian Middle Sudetes in south-west Poland .
Geography and geology
The elongated and wooded mountain range, rising steeply from the Silesian Plain, is crossed in the northwest by the valley of the Schweidnitzer Weistritz (Bystrzyca Świdnicka) , in which the villages Lubachów (Breitenhain) and Zagórze Śląskie (Kynau) lie, from the northern part of the Wałbrzyskóry of the Waldenburger Bergland , while the Silberbergpass (Przełęcz Srebrna) ( 583 m ) above Srebrna Góra (Silberberg) represents the border to the adjacent Warthagebirge (Góry Bardzkie) to the southeast .
Between Eulengebirge and Heuscheuergebirge (Polish Stołowe , Czech Broumovské Stěny ) the wide are Steinetal , one in the Klodzko (Kotlina Kłodzka) passing over sink and a south-eastern branch of the Góry Kamienne (stones mountains) , the southern portion of Waldburger highlands .
If you look at the Owl Mountains from the north-east lying lowlands or from the upstream massif of the Ślęża (Zobtenberg) ( 718 m ), it looks quite steep and imposing due to its considerable height for a peripheral mountain range of the Sudetes. The highest point of the Owl Mountains is the Wielka Sowa (German High Owl ) with 1015 m npm , an important panoramic mountain .
The gneiss of the Owl Mountains are among the oldest rocks in the Sudetes and thus among the oldest in Europe.
With reference to petrological and tectonic connections, the Owl Mountains form the north-eastern boundary of the Inner Sudetian Depression .
history
The Owl Mountains were the scene of the Silesian Weavers ' Uprising of 1844, which became particularly well-known in the period of Vormärz. Gerhart Hauptmann's drama " The Weavers " premiered in Berlin in 1894.
During the Second World War , the construction of the largest Führer headquarters , which was intended for the entire leadership of the National Socialists , was carried out here (see Riese project ) . At the same time, Krzyżowa (Kreisau) at the foot of the Owl Mountains was the main base of the Kreisau Circle , an important German resistance group directed against National Socialism.

The most important tourist destinations in the Owl Mountains are Walim (Wüstewaltersdorf) - at the foot of the High Owl - in the Powiat Wałbrzyski as well as Jugów (Hausdorf) and Sokolec (Falkenberg) , districts of the rural community Nowa Ruda (Neurode) in the Powiat Kłodzki . Due to its proximity to Wroclaw (approx. 75 km away) and its picturesque landscape, the mountains, criss-crossed by hiking trails, play an important role as a local recreation area in Lower Silesia . The Park Krajobrazowy Gór Sowich (Landscape Park Owl Mountains) was established in 1991 .
