Gübelin is a Swiss family company active in the watch and jewelery sector and based in Lucerne . It is run by the sixth generation. The company sells self-designed and manufactured jewelry under its own brand Gübelin Jewelery, but also sells luxury products from world-famous brands . The Lucerne company employs over 250 people. Gübelin has boutiques at a total of eight locations in Switzerland and Asia .

history

In 1854 Jakob Josef Mauritz Breitschmid opened his watchmaker's shop on Pfistergasse in Lucerne . Seven years later, on June 3, 1861, Eduard Jakob Gübelin was born. As a young man, he emigrated from Goldingen to Lucerne because of the economic crisis , where he completed an apprenticeship with watchmaker Breitschmid. Eduard Jakob Gübelin and Bertha Sophia Breitschmid married on October 9, 1886. She is the daughter of his former teacher Jakob Josef Mauritz Breitschmid. Eduard Jakob Gübelin becomes his father-in-law's business partner. In 1899 he took over the business from his father-in-law.

In 1903 the new managing director Eduard Jakob Gübelin-Breitschmid opened the boutique in the former "Hotel d'Angleterre" on Schwanenplatz in Lucerne . In 1923 Eduard Moritz Gübelin-Schriber, the son of Eduard Jakob Gübelin-Breitschmid, founded the gemological laboratory to check the quality of the gemstones internally. In the same year, the Gübelin company also begins to manufacture its own pieces of jewelry. These are created in the in-house jewelry studio.

In 1931 the Gübelin boutique was opened in “Haus Surselva” in St. Moritz. In 1932 a boutique follows on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich . Today Gübelin is represented in the following locations: since 1854 in Lucerne , since 1931 in St. Moritz , since 1932 in Zurich, since 1944 in Geneva , since 1967 in Lugano , since 1972 in Basel , since 2012 in Kuala Lumpur and since 2013 in Hong Kong .

In 1945 Walter Gübelin, the son of Eduard Moritz Gübelin-Schriber, took over the overall management of the company and the management of the watch workshop. His brother, the gemologist Eduard Josef Gübelin , is responsible for the gemstones and communication. Eduard J. Gübelin was a pioneer in gemology and has repeatedly shown that he is an expert in this field. For example, in 1945 he was able to contribute to a conviction of perpetrators in a series of thefts. In 1988 Walter Gübelin hands over the management of the company to his son Thomas Gübelin.

Sara Gübelin Mittelmann, the daughter of Thomas and Susy Gübelin, joins the family business in 2000 . Seven years later, she joined the Board of Directors with her brother, Raphael Gübelin. In 2011 he took over the management and became President of Gübelin.

In 2010 the Gübelin Gemological Laboratory opened a location in Hong Kong . Two years later, Gübelin expands to Kuala Lumpur . There, the first Gübelin boutique in Asia opens its doors. The following year, the family business opened a private salon in Hong Kong. Gübelin also founded the Gübelin Academy in Hong Kong in 2013 . The task of the academy is to deepen the knowledge of gemstone lovers.

In 2015 Gübelin presented its business philosophy “Deeply Inspired” and presented its three new jewelry worlds: “Deep Sea”, “Mystical Garden” and “Glowing Fire”.

The boutique, which opened in 1967 at the Hotel Schweizerhof in Bern , was closed sometime between the end of 2018 and the end of 2019.

Business units

The Gübelin company consists of several business units . These include the Gübelin Atelier, the Gübelin Boutiques, the Gübelin Academy, the Gübelin Gem Lab and Edigem. Gem Labs, the Akademie and Edigem are independent subsidiaries of Gübelin.

Gübelin Jewelery

Gübelin has had its own jewelry studio since 1923, which is located at the headquarters in Lucerne . There the jewelry is created by designers and manufactured by jewelers . academy

In 2013 Gübelin opened an academy in Hong Kong . This offers gemology courses and seminars.

The "Colored Gem Professional Training" consists of 3 levels:

  • Level 1: Brief introduction to emeralds , rubies and sapphires
  • Level 2: emeralds , rubies and sapphires explore comprehensive
  • Level 3: Analyze the inner workings of gemstones in detail and understand gemological examinations and tests from a laboratory perspective

Gem Labs

In the gemological laboratories, gemological experts deal with the analysis of precious stones. In doing so, they examine the authenticity, identity and origin of a gemstone. Auction houses, royal families, jewelers, gem dealers and collectors from all over the world rely on the gemological reports. Gübelin runs a total of three gemological laboratories. The first was founded in Lucerne in 1923 . In addition, two more laboratories were opened in Hong Kong (2010) and New York (2017).

Edigem

Edigem is an independent subsidiary of the Gübelin Group and advises clients on the valuation and sale of antique jewelry.

Dr. Eduard Gübelin Scholarship

Every year the «Dr. Eduard Gübelin Association »a grant for an innovative research project in the field of gemology . The scholarship is intended to support master's students, doctoral students or post-doctoral researchers from the fields of geosciences ( mineralogy , geology , geochemistry ), crystallography , chemistry , physics , materials science , archeology , biology and related sciences financially and otherwise in a research project in the geosciences or a related field become.

Products

Gübelin carries a wide range of luxury watch brands. In addition to this selection of watch brands, Gübelin is also a designer and manufacturer of its own pieces of jewelry, which can be bought under the Gübelin Jewelery brand.
