Günter Böttcher

Günter Böttcher (born July 24, 1954 in Kassel ; † October 4, 2012 in Bad Neustadt an der Saale ) was a German handball player and coach.

life and career

Böttcher grew up in Böddiger , where his family ran a farm, and graduated from the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule in Melsungen in 1972 . He then studied sports and geography in Marburg to become a teacher. In 1994 he was at the University of Kassel with his dissertation The importance of conditional abilities for indoor handball doctorate .

Böttcher started playing handball at Eintracht Böddiger and later moved to TSV Jahn Gensungen and then to the handball league for TV Hüttenberg . In 1979 he returned to the first division promoted TSV Jahn Gensungen. Shortly after his move, the back player suffered a cruciate ligament rupture and had to end his career as an active player. Immediately afterwards, the 24-year-old took over training at TSV Jahn Gensungen. He then worked as a trainer from 1988 to 1990 at 1. SC Göttingen 05 , at MT Melsungen and from 1993 to 2006 at HSG Gensungen / Felsberg . He also worked as a trainer in Bad Hersfeld and Rotenburg an der Fulda . In 1989 he led Göttingen to the 2nd Bundesliga North. Melsungen and Gensungen were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga South under his leadership . Most recently, he coached the HSG Zwehren / Kassel from 2009 to 2012, with whom he made it to the state league.

In his career in the German national team , Böttcher completed a total of 36 international matches under coach Vlado Stenzel . At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he finished fourth with Heiner Brand , Kurt Klühspies and Joachim Deckarm, among others .

Böttcher last worked as a lecturer at the Institute for Sport and Sport Science at the University of Kassel.

On August 8, 2012, Böttcher had a serious car accident in which he suffered pulmonary bruises, head injuries and fractured vertebrae, and has since been in a rehabilitation clinic, the first days of which were in a coma .

On October 4, 2012, he killed himself in this clinic itself . He left a wife and a daughter. In autumn 2006 he had already lost a son after a long illness.
