Günter Pichler

Günter Pichler (born September 9, 1940 in Kufstein ) is an Austrian violinist , university professor and conductor . He was the founder and first violinist of the Alban Berg Quartet .

Life

Günter Pichler began his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in 1955 . At the age of 18 he was concertmaster of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra , and at the age of 21 he was appointed concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic by Herbert von Karajan .

From 1963 to 2009 Günter Pichler taught as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and from 1993 to 2012 at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne . In 2007 he was appointed head of the chamber music department at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia in Madrid, and he also teaches at numerous summer academies. a. Pro Quartet Paris, Accademia Musicale Chigiana Siena and Misqa Montreal.

Many of his students have won international awards, are concert masters in important orchestras, professors at music colleges and universities, or have built careers as soloists. His students also include musicians from European chamber music ensembles such as the quartets Artemis , Aron , Belcea, Casals, Fauré , the Trio con brio, the Atos, Eggner , Morgenstern Trio and up-and-coming quartets such as Acies, Amaryllis, Cavaleri, Eliot , Finzi, Piatti, Minetti , Schumann, Voce, van Kuijk, Aris and Goldmund.

In 1970 Günter Pichler founded the Alban Berg Quartet and until its dissolution in 2008 was the first violinist of this ensemble, which was considered one of the world's leading string quartets.

In addition to his quartet work and teaching, Günter Pichler started a career as a conductor. Since then he has conducted many European orchestras in concerts and on tours, for example the Vienna and Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra , the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Orchestra della Toscana Firenze, I Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano, the Hallé Orchestra Manchester , the Orchester National de Lille, and the Royal Flanders Philharmonic. From 2001 to 2006 he was Principle Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa and has been its Artistic Advisor since then.
