Günther Schmid (botanist)

Wilhelm Gustav Günther Schmid (born August 12, 1888 in Braunschweig , † July 17, 1949 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German botanist and Goethe researcher . His botanical author abbreviation is " WGGSchmid ".

Life

After graduating from high school in 1907, Günther Schmid studied natural sciences with a focus on botany and zoology as well as philosophy and German literary history at the universities of Freiburg and Jena. In 1909 he became an assistant to Ernst Stahl at the Botanical Institute of the University of Jena and in 1912 with a dissertation on carnivorous plants he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . From 1913, Günther Schmid did his military service as a one-year volunteer and during the subsequent First World War, due to illness, served as paymaster for the Landsturm . In 1920 he became an assistant at the Botanical Institute of the University of Halle , habilitated in botany in 1921, was appointed extraordinary professor in 1928 and then worked from 1935 on the history of natural sciences as a scientific assistant in the Botanical Institute of the University of Halle. During this time Günther Schmid held a teaching position for botany and pharmacognosy at the University of Greifswald from 1928 to 1930 . Günther Schmid served in the Volkssturm in 1945 and after the end of the war in June 1945 became the acting head of the Botanical Institute, where he participated in the denazification of the university. In 1946 the state government appointed him full professor for the history of natural sciences and pharmacognosy.

In 1932 Günther Schmid was accepted as a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina in the botany section .

Günther Schmidt became a member of the Sturmabteilung (SA) in 1933 and subsequently of the National Socialist German Front Fighters ' Union (NSDFB), in 1934 a member of the National Socialist People's Welfare and in 1934/1935 a member of the National Socialist Teachers' Association . In 1945 he became a member of the newly founded Liberal Democratic Party of Germany (LDP).
