Günther Wendt (officer)

Günther Wendt (born February 8, 1931 in Rakow ; † October 17, 2017 ) was a German officer . He was major general and deputy chief of staff in the command land forces of the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR .

Life

Wendt, the son of a musician, began an apprenticeship as a gardener after attending primary school in 1945 . From 1946 to 1949 he worked as a farm worker. On September 1, 1949, he joined the German People's Police and was a student at the VP School in Rostock until 1950 . In 1951 he became head of the infantry department of the VP service in Schwerin, and in the same year he became a student at the college for officers in Kochstedt . In 1952 he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From October 1952 to 1953 he acted as first assistant to the head of the operational department of the Dessau Territorial Administration of the Barracked People's Police (KVP). This was followed from 1953 to 1955 as a senior officer in the Wittenberg district registration department , then from 1955 to 1956 as a department head in the Halle district registration administration of the KVP.

From 1956 a member of the NVA, until 1957 he was head of the advertising department of the Wehrbezirkskommando (WBK) Halle of the NVA and from 1957 to 1958 head of the military district command Schwerin. From 1958 to 1962 he was deputy head of the WBK Schwerin and head of the verification department and from 1962 to 1963 head of the WBK Schwerin. From 1963 to 1968 he served as head of the organization / planning department and from 1968 to 1972 as deputy head of the staff for organization in the command of Military District V in Neubrandenburg .

From 1972 to 1990 he was finally deputy head of the staff for organization in the command of the land forces of the NVA . On September 25, 1979 he was appointed major general by Erich Honecker . On September 30, 1990, he was released from military service.

Günther Wendt last lived in Wildpark-West and died at the age of 86.
