Gabriel Iranyi

Gabriel Iranyi (born June 6, 1946 in Cluj-Napoca , Romania ) is a German composer of Romanian-Hungarian-Jewish origin in the field of new music .

Life

Gabriel Iranyi studied from 1965 to 1971 composition with Sigismund Todutza and piano with Nina Panjewa at the "George Dima" Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca and in 1971 was awarded a Master of Arts in composition . In 1971 Iranyi received a professorship for counterpoint with a focus on Renaissance , Baroque and 20th century in Jassy at the "George Enesco Academy of Music". From 1977 to 1981 he was a lecturer for form theory , counterpoint and music theory at Tel Aviv University in Israel .

In 1978 and 1984 he took part in the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music as a DAAD scholarship holder , in the composition classes of Brian Ferneyhough , Helmut Lachenmann and Cristóbal Halffter . The encounters with György Ligeti , György Kurtág , Morton Feldman and Günther Becker were particularly formative for him .

Gabriel Iranyi has lived in Berlin as a freelance composer since 1988 .

In 2000 he received his doctorate in musicology with the topic “Contemporary music at the turn of the century. Thought continuity and validity of composition techniques ”. Since then he has given numerous lectures on new music and his own works at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin , New York University , the University of Wisconsin , the Landesmusikakademie Berlin , the European Piano Teachers Association , the Carl Ossietzky University in Oldenburg and the music academies in Rostock , Bucharest and Klausenburg.

In 2010 Gabriel Iranyi was elected deputy chairman of the German Composers' Association in Berlin.

In 2013 he was invited to a master class for young composers and a lecture on his own works at the Music University of Bucharest, as part of the “George Enescu” festival.

Iranyi's compositions were presented at the music festivals Gaudeamus Musik Week Amsterdam , Styrian Autumn in Graz , Days for New Music Karlsruhe , IGNM Festival 1980 in Israel a. IGNM Festival 1986 in Holland ; International Rostrum of Composers of UNESCO 1986 and 1999 in Paris ; Israel Festival 1986, Days of New Music Würzburg 1997, “Sacred Meets Secular” Wisconsin (USA), “Music Now and From Almost Yesterday” ( Milwaukee , Wisconsin / USA), “Ultrasound” Festival of the Deutschland-Radio and Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg 2001; "Intersonanzen" Potsdam 2002, performed at the "International Week of New Music" in Bucharest (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007), "young-euro-classic" in Berlin 2003 and New York University Composer's Forum 2003, 2005.
