Gabriel Marie Étienne Vanel (born January 12, 1925 in Ampuis , France , † March 1, 2013 ) was Archbishop of Auch .

Life

Gabriel Vanel studied philosophy and theology at the Notre-Dame-de-l'Argentière institution in Oullins and at the Saint-Irénée major seminary in Lyon . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1949 and was vicar in the Archdiocese of Lyon . He was chaplain in the 27th division alpine in Tizi Ouzou , Algeria and from 1964 to 1970 French military chaplain in Germany.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on April 21, 1970 titular bishop of Rota and military vicar of the French military ordinariate . The episcopal ordination donated him the Bishop of Bayeux , Jean Badré , on June 13th of the same year; Co - consecrators were Jean-Paul-Marie Vincent , Bishop of Bayonne , and Franz Hengsbach , Bishop of Essen . On February 12, 1983, he resigned his position as vicar and took over the direction of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Auch on June 21, 1985 and accepted his resignation on March 1, 1996.
