Gabriele Clarissa Hegerl
Gabriele Clarissa "Gabi" Hegerl (born January 9, 1962 in Munich ) is a German climatologist . She is Professor of Climate Systems Science at Edinburgh University .
Life
Hegerl obtained his doctorate in applied mathematics from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1992 . She worked at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology until 1997 and then spent two years at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington . After research stays at Texas A&M University and Duke University , she moved to the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh in 2007 , where she has held the Chair of Climate Systems Science since 2009.
She is married and has two sons.
In 2018 she was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldia .
Act
Hegerl's research deals with climate diagnostics and statistical climatology . It considers the variability of temperature, precipitation and climatic extremes as well as the limitation of future climate change . In her work she uses paleo - proxy data to study climate variability over the past millennium .
Hegerl was u. a. involved in the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC .
In the public debate about ways out of the climate crisis , Hegerl speaks out in favor of foregoing air travel through the creation of reliable, fast and comfortable public transport and the use of teleconferences .
